Akrotiri Tankers is pushing further into the newbuilding market, branching out into larger crude tonnage.

The Athens-based owner, run by Marielena Procopiou and Konstantinos Lampsias, has returned to China’s New Times Shipbuilding for fresh orders, according to market sources.

Greek brokers say the latest deal includes a 157,000 dwt suezmax newbuild priced at around $82m, with delivery slated for 2029.

The move marks the company’s first step into the suezmax segment, broadening its scope beyond the LR1 space where it has been building its initial footprint.

The expansion comes roughly five months after the company placed its debut newbuilding orders, booking two LR1 product tankers at New Times for delivery in 2028.

Akrotiri has been steadily building scale since launching in 2025. It currently has three LR1 tankers on the water and two more on order and the latest order suggests the owner is now looking to balance its exposure between product and crude markets.
