Athens-based Erasmus Shipinvest Group is building out its container ship exposure with a fresh order in China.

The John Su-led owner has signed for two firm 1,800 teu feeder container vessels at CSSC Guangzhou Huangpu Wenchong, with options for two more units.

The deal was formalised at a signing ceremony involving the yard and China Shipbuilding Trading Co, marking another step in Erasmus’ shift towards a more diversified fleet.

No pricing has been disclosed, but deliveries are expected later this decade.

Founded in 2010, Erasmus has been steadily moving beyond its dry bulk roots, adding tonnage across multipurpose vessels, feeders, LPG carriers and tankers.

Traditionally a Japan-focused buyer, Erasmus has recently turned more to Chinese yards as it expands and reshapes its fleet mix. Earlier boxship orders were booked at Japan’s Kyokuyo in 2022.

The company has also been linked to a series of kamsarmax bulkers at Jiangsu New Hantong Ship Heavy Industry, in what signalled a broader rethink of its ordering strategy.
