Huanghai Shipbuilding in northeast China has secured a newbuilding deal for battery hybrid bulk carriers.
The yard in Weihai has penned a contract with Jiada New Energy Ship Technology for ten 9,050 dwt ships that will feature a pair of diesel generators and eight containerised lithium battery sets, allowing them to cover about 180 nautical miles in pure electric mode.
Financial terms and delivery details of the 109.8-m-long units, designed for a sailing speed of 11.5 knots, have not been disclosed.
Celebrating its 80th birthday this year, Huanghai is best known for its shipbuilding know-how in the multipurpose heavylift, containership and roro segments. In May, the yard revealed a debut product tanker newbuilding deal with a compatriot owner New Legend Group for two firm and two optional 50,000 dwt MR product carriers.
