Malaysian containership operator MTT Shipping has pressed ahead with its fleet expansion and renewal programme by ordering two 3,300 teu newbuildings in China.

The company disclosed through the Malaysian Stock Exchange that two indirectly owned subsidiaries, MTT Shipping Pasir Gudang and MTT Shipping Miri, have contracted the vessels at Wuhu Shipyard for a combined price of about $80m.

The ships are scheduled for delivery in March and June, 2029, respectively.

The order forms part of the broader fleet rejuvenation and growth strategy outlined during MTT Shipping and Logistics’ stock market debut earlier this year.

Under that programme, the Kuala Lumpur-listed owner committed to acquiring at least eight containership newbuildings worth around $193m. The investment package includes four vessels in the 1,400 teu to 1,462 teu range, two 1,092 teu ships and the two 3,300 teu vessels now formally contracted at Wuhu.

The larger feeder ships are earmarked to expand regional carrying capacity, while the smaller units will primarily replace ageing vessels in the company’s fleet. MTT previously identified four ships averaging more than 28 years of age for replacement as part of the renewal effort.

The company has indicated it may pursue additional vessel acquisitions beyond the committed eight ships, including more 3,300 teu vessels or smaller feeder tonnage should market opportunities emerge.

MTT Shipping and Logistics Berhad began operations in January 2019. The company operates mainly within the feeder segment with vessels under 4,000 teu, serving regional ports rather than the main east-west container trades. The company currently operates a fleet of 26 containerships — 24 owned and two chartered — with a combined capacity of about 29,000 teu. Of those vessels, 15 are self-operated while 11 are chartered out.

The company also expanded beyond container shipping in 2024 by establishing a chemical tanker division and ordering two chemical tankers for delivery in the second half of 2026.
