Hong Kong owner Wah Kwong Maritime Transport has placed an order for two 114,000 dwt LR2 tankers at China State Shipbuilding Corporation-affiliated Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co (DSIC), with options for two additional vessels, as the company pushes ahead with fleet renewal and future-fuel readiness.

The contracts were signed with China Shipbuilding Trading Co (CSTC), the CSSC trading arm, and DSIC in Beijing on May 28.

Senior executives from Wah Kwong, including chairman Hing Chao and managing director Capt Zhou Jianfeng, attended the signing ceremony alongside DSIC chairman Han Dongwang and CSTC general manager Han Jianbing.

The newbuildings will feature a series of energy-efficiency and decarbonisation upgrades, including compliance with IMO Tier III emissions standards and EEDI Phase 3 requirements. The vessels will also be delivered with LNG-ready, methanol-ready and carbon capture and storage (CCUS)-ready notations. No prices have been revealed.

“As a global integrated shipping company, Wah Kwong will continue to deepen close collaboration with our core partners across the value chain, working together to build a more efficient, sustainable and resilient maritime industry,” Zhou said.
