China’s Shishi Dingsheng Shipping is branching out from dry bulk, placing its first order for large product tankers as it looks to diversify its fleet.

Clarksons is reporting the owner has contracted two 114,000 dwt LR2 newbuildings at Taizhou Kouan Shipbuilding, marking its entry into the segment.

No price has been disclosed for the vessels, which are expected for delivery in March and June 2029.

The move signals a shift for the company, which has traditionally focused on bulk carriers. Shishi Dingsheng last appeared in the dry bulk newbuilding market in 2020, when it ordered a pair of panamaxes at New Dayang.

According to fleet data, the owner currently operates nine modern bulkers and has only limited exposure to tankers, with a single MR product carrier built in 2025.

If confirmed, the LR2 order would represent a step up in scale and a move into long-haul refined products trades, where demand for modern tonnage has remained steady.

For Taizhou Kouan, the contract adds a new tanker reference to a yard better known for bulkers, small containerships and multipurpose vessels. The builder has, however, started to build a track record in tankers, having secured orders last year from chemical carrier owner Xingtong Shipping for a series of 13,000 dwt and 13,800 dwt ships.
