Chinese owner New Yangtze Navigation has ordered two newcastlemax bulk carriers at group-affiliated Zhoushan Changhong International Shipyard.

The 212,000 dwt vessels are scheduled for delivery in 2029 and are being priced by market sources at around $80m each.

New Yangtze and Changhong are both controlled by Jiangsu Xin Chang Jiang Group, making the deal an intra-group fleet expansion and shipbuilding project.

The order takes Changhong back into large bulk carrier construction after the yard focused much of its recent commercial order intake on containerships and tankers.

New Yangtze was established in Singapore in 2010 as the group’s shipping arm. The company operates dry bulk tonnage in the Yangtze and Princess fleets, carrying commodities including coal, iron ore, grain and steel products.

Changhong has built bulkers for New Yangtze before, but the latest pair represents a significant step up in vessel size for the group’s in-house fleet programme.
