Japanese shipyards are likely to win the large newbuilding project of Scorpio Bulk, pushing back Chinese rivals backed by a weak yen, its shipbuilding capability and so on.
Previously, TradeWinds said that industry players expected Chinese shipbuilders were said to win the most part of up to 25 newbuildings of ultramax bulker by Scorpio Bulk and reported that China’s COSCO Shipyard, Nantong COSCO KHI Ship Engineering(NACKS) and etc. had inked a letter of intent (LOI). However, the owner is changing the direction to Japanese yards.
Accordingly, Scorpio seems to place large bulker orders in Japan instead of China and Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding and Imabari Shipbuilding are said to be the leading candidates.
Brokers estimate the newbuilding price of 60,000 dwt ultramax bulker at around $25m-26m apiece in Chinese shipbuilding industry while Japan is suggesting around $26m-28m.
