China’s Shanghai Merchant Ship Design & Research Institute (SDARI) won a design project from compatriot Qingdao Beihai Shipbuilding Heavy Industry (BSIC) for 250,000 dwt very large ore carrier (VLOC).
The shipowner is Shandong Shipping of China and the 250,000 dwt newbuilding will be constructed in SDARI’s detailed design and be classified by China Classification Society (CCS).
The newbuilding has 325m length, 57m breadth with 25m height, having 18m of design draft. It is capable of sailing in a speed of 15 knots, complying with standards of international environment regulation.
Meanwhile, the VLOC is a new revolutionary design developed following SDARI’s former models, 230,000 dwt and 400,000 dwt ore carriers. The new design is enhanced from the former vessels’ weaknesses and particularly in energy saving, the amount of energy consumption has reduced by more than 15% comparing with the 230,000 dwt vessel. In addition, its Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) is said to be meeting up with IMO level 2 equivalent certificate.
