An examination is being conducted to include improved fuel-efficiency effects from new energy-saving innovative technologies in the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI), developed by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) by calculating fuel-efficiency of ship.
Led by Japan and Germany, a discussion is scheduled to be held in the 65th Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) in May to incorporate four innovative technologies to EEDI, such as photovoltaic generating facilities, air lubrication, using wind power, exhaust heat recovery and etc.
When this proposal takes effect, a competition in developing new energy conservation technologies is expected to get much fiercer and especially, in Japan’s shipping and shipbuilding industries, new energy-saving technologies are continuously developed and aggressively suggested to be incorporated to EEDI through industry institutions and government agencies to IMO.
