Chinese non-operating owner Xiamen Feihongshun Shipping has placed orders for two containership newbuildings at domestic yards, stepping up its presence in the feeder and mid-size segments.

The company has contracted Jiangsu Zhiyuan Shipbuilding to build a 4,350 teu vessel, marking its largest ship to date, while Ningbo Boda Shipbuilding will construct a smaller 3,300 teu unit.

Pricing for the larger ship is reported at around $42.7m, with delivery lined up for December 2027.

At Ningbo Boda, the 3,300 teu vessel is priced at roughly $30m. The yard already has a track record with the owner, having delivered one 3,004 teu ship last year and set to hand over a second unit later this year.

Alphaliner suggests that market sources are split on whether the latest order is a direct sister ship or a slightly upsized version at 3,300 teu.

The latest orders underline steady demand for feeder and regional container tonnage, with Chinese yards continuing to secure a large share of the work.

Meanwhile, also in China, Jiangyin-based Changhong Shipping has recently moved into the container segment with its first-ever order, booking a 1,056 teu vessel at Ningbo Penghong Shipbuilding Heavy Industries.

The yard will deliver the ship in early 2027, marking Changhong’s entry into box shipping. Penghong, which has reactivated the former Beilun Lantian yard, is building up a pipeline of small container vessels, chemical tankers and mini-bulkers.

It is already working on similar units for Xiamen Haitao Shipping, including two 1,056 teu ships and a 2,693 teu vessel due later this year. Alphaliner noted that Changhong’s newbuild is expected to follow the same design, though it remains unclear whether the company plans to operate the vessel itself or place it in the charter market.
