Nissen Kaiun signs for very large ammonia carriers in China

Nissen Kaiun has been tied to an order of very large ammonia carriers in China.

Brokers reported Japanese shipping mammoth had contracted four 88,000 cu m newbuilds at Yangzi-Mitsui Shipbuilding (Yamic) a joint venture yard between China’s Yangzijiang Shipbuilding and Japan’s Mitsui E&S Shipbuilding.

The ships are set for delivery from May 2028 through February 2029, according to Clarksons.

The low-profile shipowner has about 200 ships, of which 10 are listed as very large LPG carriers, and nearly another 40 newbuilds on its books.

This year kicked off with high demand for LPG/ammonia carrier newbuild berths, with multiple owners making order headlines orders in the months.

The global trade of low-carbon ammonia is expected to witness a significant surge, reaching around 69m tonnes by 2040, with the highest demand coming from Japan and South Korea due to their decarbonisation initiatives.
