Hong Kong-based diversified shipowner Wah Kwong has ordered two more ultramax bulk carrier newbuilds from New Dayang Shipbuilding.

Wah Kwong hired the shipbuilding arm of state-run machinery manufacturer Sumec Group for the first pair of two Crown 63 Plus design vessels in April this year.

No price was disclosed for either the first or second pair but brokers are pricing similar newbuilds in China at about $34m a piece.

New Dayang, which Sumec took over in 2018, has already built four ultramaxes for Wah Kwong and the Jiangsu-based yard delivered them to the Hong Kong firm between August 2023 and January 2024.

The first batch of Crown 63 Plus vessels built for Wah Kwong included the Eastern Venture which is said to be the world’s first newbuild to be certified with Bureau Veritas’ Smart EnE1 notation which recognizes intelligent energy efficiency.

Wah Kwong currently owns and operates more than 30 ships, with over 70 other vessels under management.
