German owner Vogemann has contracted Hengli Shipbuilding in Dalian to build four 180,000 dwt capesizes as well as four kamsarmaxes, according to Allied Shipbroking. The capes will deliver in 2025 and 2026 with VesselsValue suggesting they are costing $63.5m each.

The cape orders mark the return of large ship construction for Hengli Shipbuilding, a yard formerly known as STX Dalian. The yard’s bulker-focused orderbook is now approaching 30 ships.

Hengli Heavy Industry Group, a subsidiary of petrochemical giant Hengli Group, paid RMB1.729bn ($257m) to acquire all the assets of STX Dalian last year.

STX Dalian was one of the largest shipyards in the world in terms of area space when it was founded in 2006. It went bankrupt in 2014 due to a financial crisis at its parent in South Korea leaving over 20,000 employees out of work.
